Covering most of the central area of Greater London and West end and located to the west of and adjoining the ancient City of London, the City of Westminster is located directly to the east of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The River Thames runs along its southern boundary. There is a high density of people living in this district although there are a number of parks and open spaces. The City of Westminster is home to many attractions that are commonly associated with London such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and 10 Downing Street. It consists of a number of localities including the ancient political district of Westminster around the Palace of Westminster, the shopping areas around Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Bond Street, and the entertainment area of Soho. However, it is basically a residential area having Westminster City Council as its local authority.

Most of the famous tourist sites in London are located in the City of Westminster such as in Covent Garden, Hyde Park, Marylebone, Mayfair, Millbank, Regent’s Park, St James’s, St John’s Wood, Soho, South Kensington, Strand, Victoria, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, and Whitehall.

Albert Memorial and Royal Albert Hall are located in South Kensington. The Strand Area has Royal Courts of Justice, Savoy Hotel, Somerset House, and Courtauld Gallery.

The Westminster Cathedral is in Victoria and Cleopatra’s Needle is in Victoria Embankment. The attractions in Whitehall are Banqueting House, Churchill War Rooms, The Cenotaph, Clarence House, Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade and The Guards Museum.

The National Rail Stations in City of Westminster include London Charing Cross, London Marylebone, London Paddington and London Victoria. These are all main London termini stations. The area is served by 27 tube stations, and 10 of the 11 Underground lines (the Waterloo and City line is the exception).
